Car Hire at Curaçao Airport: How Pickup Works, Step by Step

Car hire Curaçao airport pickup works in five steps. You land at Hato, clear immigration, meet our driver, ride the free private shuttle to our office at the Harbor Hotel in Willemstad, then sign, leave a refundable $350 deposit and drive away with insurance included. Bring your own-country licence, your passport or ID, and cash or a card for the deposit.

Bon dia (good morning) and welcome to Curaçao. Car hire Curaçao airport style starts the moment you walk out of customs at Hato. Our driver is waiting, and a free private shuttle takes you to our office in Willemstad. The paperwork, the deposit and the keys all happen there, and the insurance is already included.

This guide walks through every step: where to meet your driver, what to bring, what the deposit covers, what to ask before you book, and what the first drive looks like. We run Around Curaçao Rental from Willemstad, and every figure below matches our FAQ page.

How Does Car Hire at Curaçao Airport Work?

Car hire at Curaçao airport takes five steps: land at Hato, clear immigration and customs, meet your driver, ride the free shuttle to our office in Willemstad, then sign, leave the deposit and drive away.

  1. Land at Hato. Curaçao International Airport (code CUR) is known locally as Hato. It sits about 12 km from Willemstad (Wikipedia).
  2. Clear immigration. Have your passport ready. The Curaçao Tourist Board asks visitors to complete the Digital Immigration Card online before they travel (Curaçao Tourist Board).
  3. Meet our driver. After customs, look for our driver. We send your meeting point before you fly.
  4. Ride to our office. A free private shuttle takes you to the Harbor Hotel Curaçao on Breedestraat in Willemstad.
  5. Sign, pay and go. You sign the agreement, leave the refundable deposit, check the car and drive away. At the end of your rental, the same shuttle takes you back to the airport.

Hato handled more than 2.4 million passengers in 2025, so the arrivals area can be busy when several flights land together. That is one reason we plan every pickup around your flight number.

Is There a Car Rental Desk Inside Curaçao Airport?

Some rental companies work from a car rental area beside the terminal. Others, including us, collect you by shuttle and hand over the car at an office in town. We have no counter in the arrivals hall, and we do not need one.

The airport’s own rental page shows the same split. On 13 October 2026 it listed nine companies under “Car Rentals” and five under “Shuttle Car Rentals” (Curaçao International Airport). The page does not say where each company is located, so ask before you book which kind of pickup you are getting.

Rental center pickup versus shuttle pickup

QuestionRental centerShuttle pickup
Where do you sign?At a counter near the terminalAt the company’s office, after a short ride
How do you get there? On foot from arrivalsBy shuttle from the airport (free with us)
Where does the car come back?At the airport rental areaAt the office, with a ride to the terminal (free with us)
What should you ask?Counter hours and queue timesMeeting point and ride time

Neither option is better for everyone. If you want to be in a car minutes after you land, a counter is the shorter path. If you would rather skip the queue and hand your bags to a driver, a shuttle works well.

Will Someone Meet Me at the Airport, or Do I Take a Shuttle?

Our driver meets you at the airport and takes you to our office in a free private shuttle. The same shuttle takes you back to the airport when your rental ends. You do not need a taxi or a bus.

Where to find your driver

After customs, look for our driver. We send the exact meeting point before you fly, so you are not guessing at a crowded exit. Share your flight number when you book, so we know when you land. Guests often tell us the driver was already there when they walked out.

How Long Does Airport Pickup Take?

The ride from Hato to Willemstad is about 12 km, usually 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. Add your time at immigration and the paperwork at our office. Immigration queues depend on how many flights land together, so give yourself some room.

Three things keep a car hire Curaçao airport pickup moving:

  • Complete the Digital Immigration Card before you fly. The portal is linked from the Curaçao Tourist Board page on travel requirements. Check the current rules there, because they can change.
  • Keep your documents together. The Tourist Board lists a passport valid for your whole stay, proof of return or onward travel, and proof of where you are staying.
  • Know about the fast-track option. The airport lists the Curaçao Express Pass, a fast-track option at immigration (Curaçao International Airport).

Car rental Willemstad Hato airport: the route and the time

The airport is on the north coast, about 12 km from Willemstad. The ride to our Harbor Hotel office on Breedestraat normally takes 15 to 20 minutes. Traffic is heavier at rush hour, so a morning or late afternoon landing can take longer.

Can You Pick Me Up From My Hotel or Airbnb Instead?

Yes. We pick you up free from most hotels and locations across Curaçao and take you to our office to collect the car. If your stay is far from the city, confirm the pickup spot when you book.

If you would rather rest before you drive after a long flight, tell us when you book and we will tell you what is possible. At the end of your rental, the same free shuttle takes you back to the airport.

What Do You Need for Curaçao Airport Car Rental?

For car hire Curaçao airport pickup, bring a valid driver’s licence from your own country, your passport or ID, your booking confirmation and a way to pay the deposit. Having all four ready makes the handover quick.

  • Driver’s licence. It must be valid and issued in your own country.
  • Passport or ID. Your passport must also cover your entry. The Tourist Board says it must be valid for your entire stay.
  • Booking confirmation. A screenshot on your phone is enough.
  • Deposit method. Cash or card. The details are in the deposit section below.
  • An offline map. Download the island map before you land, so your phone guides you even with a weak signal.

If you want to change your booking before you travel, contact us as early as you can. The sooner we know, the easier it is to adjust.

What Is the Minimum Age to Rent a Car?

Our minimum age is 21. Rental offices set their own minimums, and many start at 23 to 25, so check the age rule before you book anywhere. A younger driver can face a higher daily charge elsewhere, so ask for the full terms in writing.

Do I Need an International Driving Permit?

No. We accept a valid driver’s licence from your own country, and you do not need an International Driving Permit. Governments word their advice differently, so check yours before you travel.

  • The Government of Canada says Canadian licences are accepted but advises carrying an international driving permit (Government of Canada, updated 26 May 2026).
  • The U.S. Department of State says a valid U.S. driver’s licence is accepted (U.S. Department of State, updated 4 September 2026).

If your licence is not in the Roman alphabet, ask us before you travel what we need to see.

What Deposit Will I Pay, and Can I Use Cash or a Debit Card?

For car hire at Curaçao airport, a refundable deposit of $350 USD is taken at pickup and returned when the car comes back in good condition. You can pay in cash or by card, including Visa, Mastercard and Maestro.

What you pay at pickupDetail
Deposit$350 USD, refundable
Cards acceptedVisa, Mastercard, Maestro, Stripe card
Cash acceptedUS dollars or Caribbean guilders (XCG)
When it comes backWhen the car is returned in good condition

If you plan to use a debit card, message us before you fly and we will confirm it works. Check your card limit before you travel, because the deposit is held on top of your other spending.

Is Insurance Included, and Does My Credit Card Cover Me?

Yes, insurance is included. Collision damage waiver and loss damage waiver come with every rental, along with the legal third-party liability cover. You carry a $350 USD own-risk deductible, which you can lower to $0 for $20 USD a day.

CoverWhat you get
Collision damage waiver (CDW) and loss damage waiver (LDW)Included
Third-party liabilityIncluded, as the law requires
Own-risk deductible$350 USD
Lower the deductible to $0$20 USD extra per day
Roadside assistanceFree, 24 hours a day

Before you rely on your credit card instead, read its rental terms. Some cards need you to decline the rental company’s cover for their own cover to apply, and card cover may not pay for damage to other people’s property. The Government of Canada advises renters to buy insurance and to get the details of their personal liability coverage in writing (Government of Canada). Ask your card issuer which damage it covers in Curaçao before you leave.

Are There Any Extra Airport Fees?

No hidden fees. The number you see is the number you pay, and the $350 deposit comes back. Car hire at Curaçao airport with us includes the shuttle both ways, so there is no airport transfer to pay for.

What is included in your rental:

  • The free private shuttle from the airport and back to the airport
  • Collision damage waiver and loss damage waiver
  • Third-party liability cover
  • Roadside assistance, free, 24 hours a day
  • A full tank at pickup

Optional extras, such as lowering your deductible to $0 for $20 USD a day, are priced up front. If a price is not on your booking, ask us before you travel.

What If Your Flight Is Late or Delayed?

Tell us your flight number when you book, and message us if it changes. That is how we plan your pickup around your real landing time, not the one on the schedule.

Three habits help when a flight runs late:

  • Send us the new arrival time as soon as your airline confirms it.
  • Keep your booking confirmation and the Digital Immigration Card on your phone.
  • Keep our contact details handy. You can reach us through the contact page.

Rental Car Curacao Airport: Seven Pickup Mistakes to Avoid

These are the checks we walk through at handover on every car hire Curaçao airport pickup. Each one takes a minute, and each one saves an argument later.

  1. Skipping the photos. Photograph every side of the car, the roof, the windscreen and the wheels before you leave. The photos show the condition you received.
  2. Not looking at the fuel gauge. The car starts with a full tank and comes back with a full tank. Check the needle before you drive off.
  3. Not reading the deposit and deductible terms. Know your $350 figures and what lowering the deductible costs.
  4. Setting the GPS while moving. Enter your hotel before you start the engine. Download an offline map before you land.
  5. Forgetting which side to drive on. Traffic keeps right. Turning right on a red light is not allowed, as both the Government of Canada and the U.S. Department of State warn.
  6. Leaving valuables in the car. Both governments report thefts from vehicles. Take your bags with you and keep nothing in sight.
  7. Losing the paperwork. Keep your rental agreement and our roadside number saved on your phone.

How to check a neat car before you drive off

Walk around the car once with your phone camera running. Look at:

  • Scratches, dents and chips on every panel
  • Tyres, including the tread
  • Headlights, brake lights and indicators
  • Air conditioning and windscreen wipers
  • The fuel gauge, which should read full

Tell us about anything you find before you leave, so it is noted on the agreement.

Save these emergency numbers too: police 911, ambulance 912 and coast guard 913 (Government of Canada).

Your First Drive: From Hato to Willemstad

After your car hire Curaçao airport pickup, the first drive is short, and the rules are simple once you know five of them. Our full driving guide covers the rest.

  • Traffic keeps right, the same as the US and Canada.
  • Speed limits for cars: 40 km/h in built-up areas, 60 km/h outside them, and a posted maximum of 80 km/h on motorway-type stretches (Wegenverkeersverordening Curaçao 2000, Arts. 46 to 47). If a sign shows a lower limit, follow the sign.
  • No right turn on red. Both the Government of Canada and the U.S. Department of State say it is prohibited.
  • Give way to traffic from the right, unless a sign says otherwise. The U.S. Department of State adds that signs are often hidden or missing, so slow down at junctions.
  • Watch for animals and wet roads. Goats and other animals use rural roads, and roads get slippery in rain (U.S. Department of State).

Is driving in Curaçao hard?

Not for most visitors. Major roads are in good condition, and the traffic keeps to the right. The Government of Canada also notes that many drivers do not follow traffic laws, and that road signs differ from those at home, so keep a calm pace and leave space. Once you are settled, our road trips page lists routes to try.

Can I Return the Car at the Airport, Even for an Early Flight?

Yes. Car hire at Curaçao airport ends the way it starts: the same free private shuttle takes you from our office back to the airport. Tell us your flight time when you book, so we plan your ride around it.

To plan an early return:

  1. Check your airline’s check-in cut-off for your flight.
  2. Work back from that time, and add the shuttle ride and a margin.
  3. Fill the tank before you return the car.
  4. Hand the keys to us in person. Do not leave them in the car or at a drop spot, so we can check the car with you and note its condition.

Is the Car Handed Over With a Full Tank?

Yes. Cars start with a full tank and come back with a full tank. Fill up the day before you return, not on the way to the shuttle.

Fuel stops in Curaçao work a little differently from home, and some stations ask you to pay first. Our driving guide explains how it works. If you plan a day trip to the west side of the island, fill the tank before you go.

How We Checked This Guide

The Around Curaçao team wrote this guide in Willemstad. We run the shuttle, the handover and the return described here. The deposit, the insurance figures, the age rule and the fuel rule match our FAQ page, and we last checked them on 13 October 2026.

For everything outside our own rules, we used official sources: the airport’s own pages, the Curaçao Tourist Board, the Government of Canada, the U.S. Department of State and the Curaçao traffic ordinance. Entry rules and advisories change, so check them again before you fly. We are a rental team, not lawyers or immigration officers.
